Nancy E. Leighton, CRIS, DBE
Nancy Leighton is the Broker and Agency Principal of Leighton Insurance Associates LLC. The LLC is formed in the state of California where she holds an Individual Resident Insurance License. She works with her husband, Mike, who is a licensed California Architect and is the Managing Partner of Michael Leighton Architect, AIA LLP. He previously spent eight years in the United States Marine Corps and is designated 50% disabled by the Veterans Administration which allows him to be Small Business (Micro) and DVBE (Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise) certified. Together, Nancy and Mike can team up to provide satisfaction of SB/DVBE requirements regarding Construction Bonds and Commercial General and Professional Liability insurance.
Nancy’s association with the insurance industry began over 25 years ago when she worked on a litigation team for one of the largest Personal Injury law firms in the State of Nevada. While not a lawyer, she requested, gathered, chronicled and presented all documents and evidence to successfully settle client cases. This included preparing Interrogatories, depositions and even reading client testimony in court. After seven years of working to facilitate settlements on behalf of clients, she was asked to “join the other side” and took a team position on one of State Farm’s Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist defense firms. Interestingly, one of the attorney’s there was married to a gal who had accepted an agency appointment with State Farm. Knowing that Nancy was a bit “litigation weary” at this point, she was asked by the new agent to join her State Farm team. And so, the next seven years were spent with State Farm in both Nevada and California and much knowledge and experience were gained.
In late 2005 she decided to accept an Agency appointment with Allstate and opened her office in the newly constructed Lincoln Village at Twelve Bridges in Lincoln, CA. However, after only a year she determined that being a “captive” agent with a large personal lines carrier was not how she wanted to spend her days and sold her Allstate agency to make the transition into being an independent “brokerage”. She realized that it was in this capacity that she could be of the the most assistance to those clients with very complex needs. And, despite the downturn in the economy in the few years that followed, she was able to thrive and develop lasting client relationships.
This was evidenced in January of 2011 when Mike was asked to be the Project Manager for a private security contracting firm near Washington DC wherein he was responsible for all aspects of a program that provided armed personal security officers in high risk areas of the world under government contract. His former Marine Corps service time, vast experience in Special Forces training and meticulous attention to detail made him a correct choice for the position. And so, off they went to Northern Virginia to facilitate that project. Regardless of the distance and time difference, all her clients stayed with her agency through the next five and a half years!
The long distance move became a family affair when, daughter, Melanie, accepted a transfer of a directorship position within NASA and moved from Southern California to Alexandria, VA in 2012. Not long after, the middle son and his family of, at that time, five children also accepted a position with a company near Williamsburg and moved from Bend, Oregon to make that change. While family times together on their Northern Virginia farm were wonderful and they were able to share in the joy of welcoming grandchild #10, they missed the youngest son and his precious family who were back in Reno, NV. So, as is always the case, when the project ended it was time to come back to California and be reacquainted with the clear blue water, majestic mountains and expansive vistas of the grand West. The “Virginia” kids and grandkids remained there and that makes a great place to visit. But, for now they are happily settled in El Dorado Hills, close by their Reno family, and eager to help guide clients through the often complex process of securing the correct coverage for both their personal and business insurance needs.
